Recently I’ve had a client who has had problems with the Russian search engine Yandex crawling their website and taking up server resources and bandwidth. Yandex.ru is a popular search engine in Russia unfortuently for many Yandex ignores the Robot.txt file therefore using the “official” method is not an option.

If you have a busy forum or website with hundreds of pages you’ll find that Yandex.ru is taking up more and more site resources by indexing up to 90 pages every 15 minutes.

By following my instructions you can stop Yandex.ru indexing your website. This needs to be placed in the .htaccess file.

SetEnvIfNoCase User-Agent “^Yandex*” bad_bot

Order Deny,Allow

Deny from env=bad_bot

Using this method saves you the trouble of having to find and block Yandex.ru IP addresses and block each individually which would only work for a limited time anyway.

If you need help implementing this find out my Web Development fees today.

Hello Guys

I’ve started writing Visual Basic tutorials over the past few days and I still have loads to upload and update. I’m trying to keep the tutorials consistent with the style and look. I’m now looking to write other tutorials after I’ve finished educating you of the basic programming syntax Visual Basic.

Why I have started writing Tutorials

I lost much of my portfolio when I left Manchester and had left my computer with the ex. Last year I was very unmotivated and was all over the place. Now I’m writing tutorials and developing the likes of Island Battle, Gallery and Customer Portals to add to the BM&Co Web Portfolio.

Next tutorial is on the way very soon. Perhaps only once a day perhaps a few a day. Need help get in contact with me. Follow Visual Basic Tutor via Twitter.

Here is how this effect is achieved.

Console.Write(a.ToString() + ” + ” + b.toString ())

In the last Visual Basic: String, Integer and Double tutorial, we were looking at developing a calculator to better understand variables and data types. However the calculator looks very messy, so let’s just clean the calculator up and learn a little bit more.

Therefore we’ll be tidying the screen up and we’ll do this by displaying the equation it was calculating followed by the results too. We want to print out the value of variables a and b and the value of earch result. Here is how:

Console.Write(a. ToString() + ” + ” + b.ToString ())
Console.WriteLine(” = ” + c.ToString)

The code above coloured red is to print out the value of variable (a)
The + ” + ” + in the above code is the + sign which means we add to pieces of text.
Print out the value of variable B is followed.
Print out the value of variable C is followed by this.

If you are struggling then you haven’t understood the tutorial. Think about the above and think how you can integrate the above code to work for all equations.

Next we look at Visual Basic String Padding & Aligning Text

In the last tutorial, we learn’t Visual Basic Input Operators and Variables.

Let’s create a simple program that allows the user to enter two numbers and that displays the total sum of both numbers.

Program

Open a new project and save it as “AddingNumbers”

Type in the following code into the text editor

Console.Write(“First Number: “)
Dim a As Integer = Console.Readline
Console.Write(“Second Number: “)
Dim b As Integer = Console.Readline
Dim c As Integer = a + b
Console.Writeline (c)
Console.Readline()

Test

Press F5 to run the program

Inputs, Processes, Outputs

All computer programs consists of

Input – The information that the user enters
Process – The calculations the program needs to perform
Outputs – The values the program displays to the user

Inputs

Processes

Outputs

A
B

c = a+b

C

Okay – Now it’s your turn to do something.

Test the program by using the following input data:
A = 33.3
B = 2

What do you get?

Test your program by using input data A = h and b = w
What is the result?

It’s all good just learning what is in these tutorials, but you really need to learn by trying different things and failing you learn how Visual Basic works.

Next we’re going in with Visual Basic String, Integer and Double Data types.

Continuing on from the Hello World program let us personalise the program by asking the name of the user who is using the console.

Program

Open A New Project and save it as “Hello YOU”.

Type in the following code into your text editor

Remember between the Sub Main() and End Sub

Console.Writeline(“Hello, What is your name”)
Dim username As String
username = Console.Readline
Console.Writeline(“Hello ” + username)
Console.Readline()

Press F5 and POW! Do what you’ve just programmed the program to do! Type in your name.

Input Operators Summary

Purpose: To Read text entered by the user
Code: Console.Readline() alternatively
Console.Read()

Example: username = console.readline()

You know we’re gonna have some fun with this!! You just need to learn a little bit more and POW! You’ll have learn’t something, but not before I explain what the dim thing was all about!

Example

Username = Console.Readline()

Variables Summary

Data Entered by the user need to be stored. Computer programs use variables to store data. A variable has a name and data type. Variables need to be declared.

Dim username As String
